What Is an Intervertebral Disc? A Georgetown Chiropractor Explains

Your spine is made up of individual bones called vertebrae. Between most of these bones are flexible structures called intervertebral discs. These discs help the spine move, absorb mechanical forces, and maintain space between the vertebrae. What Is an Intervertebral Disc?


An intervertebral disc is a tough, flexible cushion located between two neighboring vertebrae. Each disc has three primary components: a soft, gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus, a strong outer ring called the annulus fibrosus, and cartilage endplates that help anchor the disc to the adjacent vertebrae (Raj, 2008).


Together, these structures allow the spine to bend, rotate, and support the body during everyday activities. Discs also help distribute pressure during movements such as walking, lifting, running, and sitting. Without them, the vertebrae would have less protection from repeated stress and would rub directly against one another.


How Can Disc Problems Develop?


Intervertebral discs naturally change over time. Repetitive loading, injury, age-related changes, and individual factors may contribute to disc dehydration, reduced height, bulging, or herniation. These findings do not always cause pain. In fact, some people may have disc changes without experiencing noticeable symptoms.


A herniated disc occurs when material from the inner portion of the disc pushes through a weakened or damaged area of the outer ring. If the displaced material irritates or compresses a nearby nerve, symptoms may include back or neck pain, burning or shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or leg (American Association of Neurological Surgeons, 2024).


For example, a disc problem in the lower back may contribute to sciatica-like symptoms that travel through the buttock and leg. However, several other conditions can cause similar symptoms, which is why a thorough assessment is important.



A chiropractor may ask about when your symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, and whether pain travels into an arm or leg. The assessment may include observing posture and movement, evaluating spinal and joint mobility, and checking muscle strength, sensation, and reflexes when appropriate.


Treatment is not based on an imaging report alone. Instead, the findings are considered alongside your symptoms, health history, functional limitations, and goals. Depending on the presentation, care may include manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, education, activity modification, and recommendations for medical assessment or referral. Chiropractic care cannot “put a disc back in place” with a single adjustment. A personalized plan may help improve movement and manage musculoskeletal symptoms, but the appropriate approach varies from person to person.


Seek prompt medical attention for new or worsening leg or arm weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin area, or severe symptoms following significant trauma.
